Vegetable Gardens for Elders, Diabetic and Tribal Community

Richard Nesje, tribal elder and resident of Tatewin Apartments, was busy on May 13th preparing the garden spot just south of the Tatewin Apartments. He plants vegetables for tribal elders, Healthy Heart participants, and the FSST Diabetes Program at the FSST Health Clinic. Although this project is part of his role doing community outreach for the FSST Diabetes Program, much more of this is a labor of love, as he donates hundreds of hours from his own time to care for this garden. Making the Most of Wellness

One year after the implementation of a Wellness Fitness Policy.
Unhealthy eating and physical inactivity are major risk factors for 4 of the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States – heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. Only tobacco use represents a lifestyle factor responsible for more preventable and premature deaths.
Better nutrition and increased exercise can not only reduce mortality, but also drastically improve quality of life. (more...) |

Jessica Hovland - FSST Member performs at Flandreau Christian Women's Connection
TUESDAY, May 21st, the Christian Women’s Connection held it’s 2nd
Annual Trendy Tots Fashion Show. Jessica Hovland, Tribal member, and her daughter Autumn, 4 years old, participated.
The morning started with a nice breakfast of cinnamon rolls, fruit and sausage, catered from the Glass House in Island, MN. Followed by speaker, Laurie Kimball, author of “Moving On”, a book with tips on how to move on in life, physically, emotionally and spiritually, without changing locations. (more..)

Lillian Moore Beane 
Lillian Evelyn Beane, age 101, passed away on April 12, 2013, at Avera Flandreau Hospital. The daughter of Oliver Moore and Grace Eastman Moore, Lillian was born on August 27th, 1911 in her grandfather Rev. John Eastman’s home at Agency Village on the Sisseton Reservation, South Dakota. Rev. Eastman had been called to serve the Goodwill Presbyterian Church in 1906, after serving as the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Flandreau for 30 years. (more...)

Marcie Jones New Oral Health Coordinator

“Hello!” I would like to introduce myself, my name is Marcie Jones and I was recently hired as the Oral Health Coordinator (OHC) for the Tribal Clinic dental department. This is a new position through a grant awarded from Delta Dental to all S.D. reservations; the people who are targeted for this grant are children age 0 to 9 and their mothers, and also diabetics. Topa Okadokiciyapi - "Four Winds Youth Crew/Culture Club

The staff at the Grace Moore Senior Citizens Center hosted a Valentine’s Dinner at 5pm on February 14th for Tribal community elders. The elders enjoyed an evening eating a great meal and socializing. (more...) |

Topa Okodokiciyapii Youth Culture Club

On January 16th the Tate Topa Okodakiciyapi (“Four winds Youth Crew/Culture Club”) was busy getting back to their weekly classes every Wednesday night from 6 pm to 8 pm at Eastman Hall. Redwing Thomas, Dakota Language Specialist for FSST, started a children’s Dakota Language Immersion Class for school age children. Thirty-six children enrolled for classes, but not all were in attendance on January 16th. Due to the flu virus and the long break during the holidays, 14 children were in attendance.(more...)

Annual Wokiksuye (Memorial Ride) Commemorates Hangings of Dakota Men

Since 2008, the annual Dakota 38 Wokiksuye (Memorial Ride) took place the second week in December, 2012, beginning at Lower Brule. For 16 days the horseback riders passed through South Dakota and Minnesota. The final stop on the 331 mile journey will be Mankato, Minnesota at Land of Memories Park. (more...) |

Senator John Thune visits American Indian Veterans and Tribe

Senator John Thune, R-South Dakota, came to Flandreau on October 2nd. The first stop was at the Flandreau Indian School (FIS) to visit with the FIS administration and program departments. Great Plains Tribal Chairmen's Association Meeting Held at Flandreau
The Great Plains Tribal Chairmen’s Association Meeting was held at Eastman Hall, September 20th & 21st. The FSST Executive was hosts for the quarterly meeting. Flandreau man's family connection to the US-Conflict
FLANDREAU — When Myron Taylor encountered an Abraham Lincoln impersonator a few years back at the Pipestone, Minn., Civil War Days, the two men had a lot to discuss. Myron is a direct descendant of one of the Native Americans the real Lincoln pardoned in the wake of the Dakota Conflict of 1862.

Inauguration of New Council Members
The FSST Executive Committee hosted inauguration ceremonies for the newly elected council members on Friday, August 10th at 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Royal River Casino’s Royal Room. Legacy of Survival Event Held at Flandreau

Tribal Elders Interviewed by Media

Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribal elders were interviewed by the Twin Cities Television Company, Diversity Foundation, Winona, MN and Pipestone National Monument Cultural Resource Manager Mark Calamia. The interviews were scheduled for Thursday, August 16th at the Commons Room, Tatewin Apartments. Carol Robertson was asked by JB Weston and Franky Jackson to assist them during the Legacy of Survival event to help with the media request to interview Tribal elders.(more...)

FSST Employee Picnic

The FSST annual picnic was held Friday, June 22nd at the Japanese Gardens in the City Park from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm. The picnic was potluck with the Tribe furnishing hot dogs, brats, hamburgers, Sally Allen’s famous potato salad and cold drinks. (more...)

Storm Damages Tribal Offices and Homes
A storm with 75 mile an hour winds and heavy rains hit the southwest part of Flandreau on Saturday night May 5th. The Tribe’s quarterly General Council meeting was held Saturday morning from 9 am to noon and experienced a severe thunderstorm while in session at Royal River Casino. It passed and the next round of storms came in around 10 pm Saturday night…an even bigger storm.(more...)

General Council Quarterly Meeting

The General Council Quarterly Meeting was held on May 5th at the Royal Room, Royal River Casino. Mothers Day Plan
A Mother’s Day was hosted at the Grace Moore Senior Citizens Center on Friday, May 04, 2012. The staff decorated and prepared a delicious noon meal of chicken salad, fruit, biscuits, fruit punch and pineapple angel food cake. Each lady was given their choice of a Mother’s Day flower of either a pink, purple or dark pink carnation.

Community Center Plans
The FSST Executive Committee approved proceeding with a Community Center. Thomas Ranfranz, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Liaison for nine years, was asked to assist the Tribe with a $3.7 million grant award to be phased in 3 years for construction from Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community’s grant program.(more...) |

New South Dakota Symphony receives three significant grants totaling $177,500 to fund Phase of the Lakota Music Project
Sioux Falls - The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra (SDSO) has been awarded three significant grants in support of Phase II of the Lakota Music Project, which begins on March 18, 2012 in Sturgis, South Dakota. The South Dakota Symphony received a $150,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a $20,000 grant from the John T. Vucurevich Foundation, and a $7,500 grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council.(more...)

My name is Gail (Kitto) Soward. My mother was the late Cora Faye Kitto and I am the granddaughter of the late Howard and Nina (Allen) Kitto.

The Tatewin Apartments Board arranged to have Helen Thune, from SD Department of Social Services, Division of Adult Services & Aging (ASA), Brookings, SD office, visit with Tribal Elders about referral services available to them. Dakota Language Program - "Education - Good Medicine"

Redwing “Red” Thomas, recently hired with the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe to teach the Dakota Language, has devised a packet of Dakota words and emails a Dakota word for the week. Dakota Language Classes

Dakota Language classes started on Wednesday, February 8th, at Eastman Hall from 6 pm to 8 pm. Redwing Thomas, Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska, was available to teach classes for the Dakota Language. New Materials at the Moody County
Resource Center
The Moody County Resource Center recently received a copy of a Dakota software program titled “Dakota byki.” The vocabulary list was developed by the Manitoba First Nation Education Resource Center. The software features over 150 words lists usually with 10 words each. There are over 10 lists of words related to hockey, 6 lists for conversations, lists for restaurants and body parts plus many lists with the special Dakota consonants. Not only can you see the word you can hear the word. You can play words games with the lists and practice your pronunciation. Also, the program allows you to develop your own list and import lists others have made. (more...)

FSST Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) JB Weston and consultant/grant writer Franky Jackson hosted a Dakota NAGPRA Coalition (Native American Graves Protection Repatriation Act) Conference at the Royal River Casino January 17-18, 2012. The 7th Year of the Dakota 38 Wokiksuye Memorial Horse Ride is taking place, and the dream of prayer, healing and forgiveness for riders, communities and nations continues. Friends, allies and volunteers are invited to help in whatever way they can, such as: Hay and feed for horses, lodging, fuel and cooks to provide meals along the route. (more...)

Sid Byrd Celebrates 93rd Birthday

On Monday night, December 19th, Sid Bryd’s 93rd Birthday was celebrated with a Birthday Potluck Dinner at Eastman Hall from 6 - 9 p.m. The event was hosted by his children Sam Byrd, Pam Byrd, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Farewell Lunch for Grant McAdaraugh

A Farewell Lunch was held for Grant McAdaragh at the FSST Health Clinic on December 19, 2011. Grant had been with the Tribe as Diabetes Program Director for nine years and resigned to take another position at Brookings Hospital. He will be employed within the IT Department to make possible the sharing of information with Avera McKennan Hospital and patient diagnosis via computer technology.(more...)

Cindy (Hovland) Woolston, is employed with Sheridan, Wyoming Public Schools as a certified interpreter and licensed through the Wyoming State Department of Education. She also teaches American Sign Language (ASL) to Junior High School students and has an active “Sign Club.” (more...)
